This post details everything you need to know about Brevard Virtual School. We will discuss how to register for courses, and how to know which courses to take. This post is for CBHS students who will take some classes through BVS; this is not for full-time BVS students.
Registering
If a student has not previously taken a class through Florida Virtual School, FLVS, or through Brevard Virtual School, BVS, then they will need to create an account first. Students who have an account will just login and request the new course or courses. See the attachment below for steps with pictures.
On step 10, students will pick their preferred start date. Students can sign up for the courses now, and select August 24th as the start date. Once a student requests a course, it will be sent for School Counselor verification. We check the requests daily, and ensure the student has selected the appropriate courses and segment. Once the course is verified, BVS will assign a teacher. Once a teacher is assigned, the course can begin. See the attached pdf to understand how to tell if a teacher has been assigned, and how to start a course.
Which Courses to Take
First, let’s clarify what a typical, on-campus schedule would look like. With block scheduling, 1 period (also referred to as a block) = 1 full credit. If the class in a 7-period schedule would have lasted the entire school year, it is a 1 credit course. For example, English 2 taken in the first semester (August-December) would grant 1 full credit. In the 2nd semester (January-June) the student would not have English. Students will now only have 4 blocks each semester. Realistic example below:
Semester 1 | Semester 2 |
English 2 (1 credit) | Fashion (1 credit) |
Ceramics (1 credit) | Chemistry (1 credit) |
Orchestra (1 credit) | Geometry (1 credit) |
US History (1 credit) | HOPE (1 credit) |
Some classes, that would previously just be one semester, are only .5 credits. On a 7-period per day schedule, those would have only lasted August-December, and the student would have earned .5 credits. Some examples of those courses are: Career Research, Team Sports, Sociology, and Law Studies. In a block schedule, those classes will now only last half of a semester, or one quarter (nine weeks). In the example schedule above, if the student took Career Research and Team Sports instead of HOPE, then both Career Research and Team Sports would fit into the 4th block in the 2nd semester. Career Research would be quarter 3 (first nine weeks of 2nd semester) and Team Sports would be quarter 4 (2nd nine weeks of 2nd semester).
When choosing virtual classes, be mindful of the amount of credits each class is. You can find a list of all of the courses here: https://www.flvs.net/flex/courses*. Clicking on a course, Peer Counseling 1 for example, will show you the amount of credits that course is. Peer Counseling 1 is .5 credits. To fill an entire block, the student would need to take Peer Counseling 1 and Peer Counseling 2.
When selecting the courses, it will ask for the segment (step 9 in the first handout). A segment is a semester (in the 7-period schedule). A student would need to select “All Segments” for classes that are one full credit, like English or Digital Information Technology.

BVS is the platform that is highly recommended. The teachers are Brevard residents, and all of their courses offered are designed to match our block scheduling. If, for some reason, a student takes a class through FLVS, make sure when registering that the 18 week option is selected. This is very important if choosing FLVS, and ensuring they stay on track.
As always, students should take purposeful electives to ensure they are on track for graduation. To see the high school graduation requirements, click here:
